This is such an exciting time. You’ve just welcomed your bundle of joy into the world and are getting the hang of being a new father.

There is so much to learn about new babies and you probably have so many questions.

How much should they sleep? How much should they eat? Are they growing at the right pace?

To make it simple, we have put together a short summary of answers to the most frequently asked new-dad questions. Here is what to expect.

Feeding (Breast or Formula Milk)

Depending on whether your partner is breastfeeding or not, newborn to 1-month old babies drink 2-4 ounces of milk between 7-8 times per day (more if breastfeeding).

1 to 3-month old babies drink 5-6 ounces of milk, 5-7 per day.

Sleep

From birth to 6 weeks, your baby will need 4-8 naps per day ranging from 15 mins to 4 hours per nap. They should go down for the night between 9 pm and 11 pm and sleep for 8-14 hours per night. Total Daily hours of sleep should be between 14-18 hours.

From 6 weeks to 3 months, your baby will need 3-4 naps per day ranging from 30 mins to 2 hours per nap. They should go down for the night between 8 pm and 11 pm and sleep for 8-13 hours per night. Total Daily hours of sleep should be between 11-15 hours.

Growth

Baby boys and baby girls grow at different paces. According to the World Health Organization, at the end of month six, expect:

Your baby girl to be about 57 cm long, weight 5.1 kg and have a head circumference measurement of 38 cm.

Your baby boy to be about 58.2 cm long, weight 5.6 kg and have a head circumference measurement of 39 cm.

Developmental Milestones

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, by 3 months, your baby should be able to:

  • Open & Shut Hands.
  • Raise Head & Chest While on Tummy.
  • Swipe at Dangling Objects.
  • Grasp or Shake Hand Toys.
  • Follow Moving Objects with Eyes.
  • Develop a Social Smile.
  • Recognize Familiar Objects & People.
  • Respond to Some Sounds and Enjoy Playing with People.
