If your drink choices are stuck in a red-or-white rut, consider this your sign to shake things up with sake. It’s smooth, versatile, and ready to prove it deserves a permanent spot on your table.
Despite being Japan’s National drink, sake is still relatively unknown in Canada. While Japanese cuisine is thriving on the Michelin scene, this centuries-old beverage hasn’t received the same attention from Canadians.
That’s something Michael Tremblay, one of Canada’s only two certified Sake Samurais, is working to change. His goal is to introduce Canadians to the variety and versatility of sake, proving it’s more than just a pairing for sushi.
Sake offers a wide range of flavours and styles, from the crisp and floral Ginjo to the citrus-forward Yuzu, and the warm, comforting Junmai. Pair a refreshing Ginjo with grilled seafood or let a hearty Junmai complement comfort dishes. For a zesty kick, Yuzu sake is perfect with spicy dishes and fresh salads.
Despite its incredible potential, sake still remains limited in Canada. That’s why the Japanese External Trade Organization and the Consulate General of Japan recently hosted an immersive tasting event to raise awareness for sake. Guests participated in tastings led by the Sake Samurai himself, explored unexpected food pairings and enjoyed cultural performances.
Sake isn’t just an alternative to wine. It’s an experience that enhances food in ways you might not expect.
